Ilkley DMI therapy for children and infants

Child climbing out of sandbox

Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) is a type of therapeutic treatment for children and infants with delayed motor skills. I'm a recently qualified introductory level A DMI therapist offering treatment at my Ilkley clinic as well as offering home visits and appointments at my home-based clinic in Knaresborough. Find out more about my DMI therapy services below.

What is DMI therapy?

For children with delayed motor skills, their movement patterns are often atypical and reaching certain functional goals can be challenging. DMI therapy is designed to improve your child’s gross motor skills through the use of specialised exercises, helping them to achieve their developmental milestones, such as sitting up, crawling or walking.

The exercises used in DMI therapy are carefully chosen by your DMI therapist to target beneficial areas in your child’s automatic postural responses. These exercises help to stimulate neuroplasticity, enabling your child to develop new neuronal connections in their brain which is needed to achieve motor milestones and learn new skills. In addition, DMI therapy can improve your child’s alignment and posture, their range of movement and motion, balance and gradual progression. It’s a really dynamic treatment that can help your child thrive in so many different ways!

Is DMI therapy suitable for my child?

Children or infants diagnosed with motor delay may find DMI therapy beneficial. This includes conditions such as:

  • Down Syndrome

  • Cerebral palsy

  • Global developmental delay

  • Hypotonia

  • Genetic disorders or chromosomal abnormalities

  • Spinal cord lesions

  • Acquired brain injury

Infants born prematurely may also find DMI therapy beneficial.

If you’re unsure whether DMI would be suitable for your child, please don’t hesitate to get in touch for specific advice.

What does DMI therapy involve?

Just like all treatments here at Flow Osteopathy, every DMI session takes an individualistic approach. I’ll assess your child’s specific circumstances and case history as well as understanding your goals for the sessions before deciding upon a selection of exercises that will help to challenge and develop your child’s neurological system. Most importantly, I’ll work in partnership with you to help your child reach the goals that are most important to you both. I aim to make DMI therapy as fun and as enjoyable as possible – and I encourage you to bring along your child’s favourite toy, book or music with you to the Ilkley clinic for additional comfort.

Where do your DMI sessions take place?

I'm proud to offer a flexible approach when it comes to your DMI therapy appointments. These are usually undertaken at the osteopathic clinic in Ilkley, West Yorkshire, but I completely understand that getting out of the house with young children can be difficult at the best of times so I'm proud to offer home visits too (at an additional cost). If Ilkley isn’t within reach, I also offer DMI therapy appointments at my home-based clinic in Scotton, near Knaresborough.
